Point Guard Chauncey Billups helped lead the Detroit Pistons to a championship in 2004. He will be back with the team to help the rebuilding process in 2013.
The former Finals MVP is expected to sign a two-year, $5 million-plus deal with the Pistons, according to Yahoo! Sports citing league sources. This means the 36-year old BIllups could end his career in Detroit.
Billups, the seasoned veteran, will most likely serve as a role model and mentor for the Brandon Knight, the Pistons up-and-coming point guard.
The five-time all star spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers but was extremely limited in his playing time due to an Achilles injury, according to ESPN.com.
However, he appeared on ESPN’s “First Take” in June and said “I feel like I’m back healthy again.”
In L.A. Billups got a lot of time at the shooting guard position with all-star guard Chris Paul running the point. In 2011-2012 he only played in 20 games and in 2012-2013 he played in 22 games. Billups started every game he played within the two season.
Prior to his two-year stint in L.A., Billups was a member of the Denver Nuggets where he was a source of leadership and was able to provide some strong years. In 2009-2010 he averaged 19,5 points, 5.6 assists and shot 38 percent from behind the arc.
According to Yahoo! Sports Pistons general manager Joe Dumars (a former Piston guard and a Hall of Famer) has considered trading BIllups to the Nuggets a mistake. Know that the team has him back, he hopes Billups will be an example to what Dumars hope to be the next great Pistons guard in Brandon Knight.
