U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, has been hospitalized in Boston and is in a stable condition, according to the spokesman for the Nantucket hospital where she was initially taken.
Heinz Kerry was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition by an ambulance on Sunday evening where she was stabilized by doctors before being shifted to Boston, said the spokesman.
Heinz Kerry suddenly became ill while on the island of Nantucket. She was accompanied by her husband John Kerry.
"The family is grateful for the outpouring of support it has received and aware of the interest in her condition, but they ask for privacy at this time," said Kerry's spokesman, Glen Johnson, in a statement.
The couple got married in 1995. It is the second marriage for both. Heinz is the widow of former U.S. Senator John Heinz.
John Heinz died in a helicopter accident in 1991.
Teresa Heinz Kerry was born in Mozambique and after moving to the United States, she started working for the Trusteeship Council of the United States in the 1960s.
She was treated for breast cancer in 2009. "I wasn't scared because I'm very analytical about things like this," Heinz told CNN while speaking about her cancer in 2010.
"I'm kind of, I guess, a little fatalistic," added Heinz.
The U.S. Secretary of State was with his wife at their home in Nantucket since his return from the Mideast and Southeast Asia trip on July 3.
