The Indian police department in New Delhi has released a list of 664 sexual offenders on its website, disclosing the names and case details of the assailants.
The list includes the names of all sexual offenders from 1983 to 2013, according to the Delhi Police. It also includes pictures of some of the sexual offenders.
The list comes months after a series of high-profile rape cases. Recently the whole nation was in a uproar over the brutal gang rape of a 23-year-old college student in a moving Delhi bus, in another instance a Swiss woman was gang raped in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
An American woman in the Indian tourist town of Manali was also gang raped in recent times.
These cases, which got high-media coverage, might have forced the police department to take every possible step to counter sexual assaults in the country following massive public protests demanding an end to such shameful crimes.
The Indian capital city this year has witnessed a surge in crimes against the women, according to the Indian Television news channel, IBN Live.
The capital has seen an increase of 158 per cent in rape cases and 600 percent increase in molestation, reports the TV channel.
Last month, all the three men who raped the 31-year-old American woman in Manali were arrested by the police and are in police custody awaiting trial.
The woman was taken to an isolated-wooded area and gang raped when she was hitchhiking back to her guest house after visiting a friend nearby in the town.
The American victim, whose identity was not disclosed by the police, said that the culprits even took away her iPhone and some money.
