Results from Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly's toxicology report indicate that one half of the hip-hop duo Kris Kross died from a drug overdose, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office in Atlanta said, Tuesday.
Chris Kelly was first pronounced dead in May when he was found unconscious in his Atlanta home. According to Reuters, Mary Beth Hauptle, an investigator from the Medical Examiner's office, claimed the test results showed a high level of drugs in the late rapper's system, but did not identify which drugs specifically were used.
One of Kelly's friends told police that arrived on site May 1 that 34-year-old Kelly was 'speedballing'-taking in a mix of heroin and cocaine-the night before he died. According to a police report, officers rushed Kelly to the hospital once he was found, but to no avail-he died three hours later while still in the medical facility.
After searching Kelly's house, police officers made the assumption that Kelly passed due to drug overdose. The artist's autopsy indicated that Kelly had not engaged in any foul play or trauma, police told Reuters.
In the police report first taken at the scene of the crime, Kelly's uncle said that the rapper had used drugs heavily in the past.
Kris Kross's "Mac Daddy" Kelly and "Daddy Mac" Chris Smith were best known for their hit song "Jump," which brought the two 13-year-olds to the top of the charts in 1996.
"To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music," Kelly's family said in a statement released after his death. "But to us, he was just Chris-the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party."
