British actress Charlotte Kirk has been cast in the role of Nicole Brown Simpson in "An American Mystery", a biopic on former footballer OJ Simpson and the controversy surrounding him. The Wrap confirmed the news from a representative of the actress.
Kirk will also be seen in supporting roles in "Black Dog, Red Dog" by James Franco and "Non Stop" which stars Liam Neeson.
Brown Simpson met OJ Simpson in 1977 when she was a waitress at a nightclub in Beverly Hills and married him in 1985. They divorced in 1992. Two years after their divorce, she was found murdered at her home in Los Angeles along with her friend Ronald Goldman, and OJ Simpson was charged with their murders. After a criminal trial that became one of the most watched events on television in the US and reportedly divided observers on racial lines, OJ Simpson was acquitted of the charges, but later found guilty of wrongful deaths in a civil suit and ordered to pay damages.
"An American Mystery" will be directed by Joshua Newton and released in 2014, two decades after the notorious incident. Newton is said to have a budget on $65 million to make the movie. Media reports have claimed that the biopic has private backers and that it will bring "startling" new evidence in the case to the attention of the public. "'An American Mystery' has the capacity to challenge entrenched attitudes on a topic that has inspired visceral reactions for almost a generation," said Newton as quoted by Entertainment Weekly. "Our goal is to lay bare the facts and have the audience reach their own conclusions."
Besides the big screen next year, the OJ Simpson trial will be also be revisited on the small screen through a series on Fox. Titled "The Run of His Life: The People v. OJ Simpson", the series "will take viewers behind the scenes of 'The Trial of The Century,' driven by the nonstop plot of a courtroom thriller and presenting the story of the trial as it has never been told."
