Nvidia's Shield has been delayed to an undetermined date in July after a undetermined mechanical malfunction held up the original June 27 release date.
Nvideo Corp. The largest maker of graphics card chips on the market have been developing a personal handheld gaming device. Recently the company dropped the price of the system from $349 to $299 in anticipation of its release date. But the company postponed the release date with less than a day's notice citing only a "mechanical issue."
"During our final QA process, we discovered a mechanical issue that relates to a third party component," the company wrote in a statement on Wednesday. "We want every Shield to be perfect, so we have elected to shift the launch date to July. We'll update you as soon as we have an exact date."
The decision will have a big impact on those who were eagerly awaiting the Shield's release.
"We apologize to those who have preordered SHIELDs and to all those who are waiting for them to go on sale," the company's blog said. "But we want every SHIELD to be just right. We'll let you know when we have an exact shipping date in July. We think it will be worth the wait."
When it finally is released, the Shield will have a five-inch, 720p HD screen, which runs the latest Android operating system. It's powered by the company's Tegra processor and will boost the sales of the processor line by offering huge titles like "Borderlands 2" and "Sonic 4 Episode 2." In addition, the handheld offers its users access to apps like Facebook, Hulu Plus and Twitter al right there in an easily portable screen and controller flip combo.
All anyone can do now is hope the mechanical problems is fixed in a timely manner and the company is able to make good on its promise the Shield will be "worth the wait."
