An LAPD shooting took place this afternoon when a police officer was reportedly shot in the face on Tuesday during the middle of a probation search at a house in South L.A., according to reports.

A gunman hiding in an attic opened fire on several officers conducting the search, wounding a parole officer and Los Angeles gang officer, law enforcement authorities told The L.A. Times.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the officer was taken to a local hospital. There were no immediate details on the extent of the officer's wounds.

The Times noted that the attacker shot multiple rounds inside the house, hitting the gang officer in the face and neck and the parole officer in the leg.

A reason for the shooting remains unknown. Police are hoping the officers, who are undercover burglary detectives, can identify their attacker.

"Anyone who is willing to do this and take on two armed police officers outside of a police station is obviously a very dangerous person," LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith told KABC news. "We want to do everything we can to get this individual in custody so we can keep our community safe." The other detectives at the scene of the crime received minor wounds as officers swarmed the area and launched a manhunt for the attacker.

The suspect was described as a black male, 30 to 35 years old, armed with a hand gun, wearing all black clothing, a black hat and black shoes.

A number of homes in the neighborhood were being evacuated as a precaution.

Metrolink lines 55, 120, 202, 610 were also being detoured at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks Station due to police activity.
