A sequel to "World War Z" could be underway, E! Online reports. According to the website, Paramount was so impressed with the way audiences responded to the opening of Brad Pitt's zombie-apocalypse movie that there is a strong possibility that there could be two more movies to follow. Rob Moore reportedly confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.
The movie, based off the books by Max Brooks, was initially supposed to be a trilogy but after numerous production problems, that idea was put on hold. In an interview with Vanity Far, Brad Pitt told the magazine how finishing the production was a bit of a struggle. Problems included going way over their allotted budget, having to do numerous reshoots and pushing back the release date from December 2012 to June. To finish the movie cost over $200 million. According to E! Online, the first screening of the movie did not sit well with audiences and they were forced to reshoot an extra 30 to 40 minutes of the movie to change the ending.
"It was, like, wow. The ending of our movie doesn't work," said Marc Evans, president of productions at Paramount told Vanity Fair. "I believed in that moment we needed to reshoot the movie."
Paramount chose to redo the entire ending which turned out to be the right decision. "World War Z" was second at the box opening behind "Monsters University" and earned $111.8 million worldwide, including $66 million in North America.
The action-packed movie is Pitt's biggest box office opening to date and when asked about a sequel at the London premiere the actor told "E! News" that it was definitely possible.
"We gotta see if this one works first," Pitt said. "But there's ton of information to mine from the book, certainly."
Even though Pitt wouldn't confirm whether a sequel was actually in the works, his leading lady in the movie, Mireille Enos, let it slip at the premiere that she had already signed on for two more "World War Z" films.
