The real and mortal Stephen Colbert will premiere his new "Late Show" this fall, nine months after putting his immortal late-night character to rest at Comedy Central.

CBS will premiere the "Late Show with Stephen Colbert" on Sept. 8 at 11:35 p.m. The late night series will continue to film at the historic Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City.

"The production office is open, the premiere date is set, and we're incredibly excited to welcome the creative and comedic genius of Stephen Colbert to CBS late night this fall," Nina Tassler, Chairman of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement.

Colbert added, "I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby."

Colbert wrapped up "The Colbert Report" on Dec. 18 on Comedy Central. The "Daily Show" spin-off series earned two Peabody Awards, 29 Emmy Award nominations and six Emmy wins. The 50-year-old comedian previously spent eight years as a correspondent for Jon Stewart's "Daily Show."

Letterman originated the CBS late-night series on Aug. 30, 1993. The show won nine Emmy Awards and earned 73 Emmy nominations.
