Viral photographs of two women choosing to sunbathe on top of graves at an Australian cemetery has sparked outrage after being circulated on social media.
The images of the sun-seeking vacationers were captured over the weekend at Glenmaggie Cemetery, immediately causing anger across the state, Herald Sun reported. The couple whose graves the women lay on had been buried for 30 years and had family in the area.
"This is disgusting. This is my friend's grandparents grave they are sunbaking on,'' one wrote on Facebook.
Describing the irreverent act as offensive and disrespectful, family members whose loved ones are buried at the site claimed that the unidentified women, in their 40s, should be ashamed for brazenly stripping down to their bikinis and sprawling on the gravestones overlooking the picturesque lake.
"You disrespectful girls, this is truly shameful," wrote another user, whose grandparents, aunts and uncles were all buried at the cemetery.
"The people buried in this cemetery were hard working and respected within this community. I am saddened that our families have had to see this image."
The shocking incident has left the community bitterly disappointed, said Peter Coleman, a member of the Glenmaggie Cemetery Trust, where three generations of relatives are buried.
"It's not the done thing in my eyes, it's ridiculous,'' he said. "Thankfully there was no damage, that was my big concern.''
Meanwhile, the cemetery's spokesman said they would appreciate it if the women came forward and offered an apology.
