Notre Dame (7-5) had a hot start to the season but fizzled out down the stretch, losing five of their last six games, including four straight. They finished the regular season with a 49-14 blowout loss at USC, which further highlighted the Fighting Irish's deficiencies on defense. With the chance to end their 2014 campaign on a high note, coach Brian Kelly admitted the pressure will be on quarterback Malik Zaire, whom Kelly named the starter this week, and the offense to manage the clock.
"We'll have to do a great job of keeping our defense off the field, and our offense has a lot to say about what goes on there," Kelly said, via ESPN. "These are important practices and we're better at (the quarterback) position because of it."
LSU, meanwhile, finished the regular season with an 8-4 record after snapping their two-game losing streak with a 23-17 season-finale win at Texas A&M. For coach Les Miles, Tuesday will mark his 10th bowl game in as many years.
"There's a tradition and a culture here we've kind of established and the young men that come here really enjoy stepping into this room and being a part of that culture," Miles said. "It's interesting too, you hate to say good-bye, we said good-bye to 22 seniors at the banquet and they're a quality group of men. To think the team, they talk about their time here, and what they don't realize is they impact the people here."
