'Dubai Against Diabetes' Breaks Guinness World Record

The "Dubai Against Diabetes" program broke a Guiness World Record Thursday for creating the largest-ever light bulb circle.

The program, which promotes diabetes awareness and education, lit 11,022 light bulbs on Dec. 25. The number of light bulbs is representative of the number of users who downloaded the program's application, and was the largest number of light bulbs to ever be lit in a circle in the world, reported The Associated Press.

Dr. Fathia Al Awadi, Chairperson of Dubai Diabetes Control and Combat Committee at Dubai Health Authority (DHA), spoke at the event about DHA's role in spreading awareness and the "Stay Strong" app created by Dubai Against Awareness.

"This initiative is part of the overall Dubai Against Diabetes initiative. The goals of the Dubai Against Diabetes initiative include: promoting better awareness about the causes and threats of diabetes, informing people about ways in which they can prevent and combat diabetes by adopting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and eventually achieving our target of reducing the prevalence of diabetes in Dubai," said Awadi.

Diabetes is a growing epidemic worldwide; about 387 million are living with diabetes internationally, a number which is up from 382 million last year, reported Diabetes UAE.

The app is designed to educate people on the disease. "It's a first-of-its-kind health education and national support program that encompasses all three important strands namely the physicians, the general public and the educators in Dubai," Awadi said of the app at the event.
