Two maintenance workers were rescued after being trapped on scaffolding in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday.
The window-washing duo was on 46-story tall Hearst Tower at 57 Street and Eighth Avenue when their mechanical scaffolding broke down. According to NBC station 11 Alive, the scaffold looked as though it was folded in the center, which law enforcement officials said was par for the design course. But the lock did not properly pop into place, leaving the workers in a precarious situation. They stood on either side of the v-shaped scaffold.
As they dangled from the 44 floor of Hearst Tower, firefighters moved quickly to rescue the marooned men. For an hour and a half, the two groups communicated with each other from the top of Hearst Tower. They first tried pulling them from the roof, but ditched that method and went inside the building instead.
Fire department officials told the Associated Press that rescuers cut open the windows and grabbed the men, pulling them inside to safety.
The two workers were taken in for medical evaluation, but did not sustain any injuries.
Some parts of 57 and 58 Streets at Eight Avenue were closed to vehicle traffic.
