Final Fantasy 15 Release Date: PlayStation 4 Announces the New Title at E3 Press Event (TRAILER)

It's no secret that Sony came armed and ready to excite their fans at the first day of the E3 gaming conference. In addition to the major news that the PlayStation 4, the company's next flagship next generation console, will have no restrictions on trading and reselling used games, the company focused on some of the major titles PlayStation fans can look forward to in the next generation.

Perhaps no trailer for a game was as highly-anticipated and full of surprises as the trailer for long-awaited Final Fantasy Versus 13, which now goes by the name Final Fantasy 15.

Previously, the Versus franchise only existed in the same universe as the other Final Fantasy games. Characters existed on a different planet and had no contact with the ones in the regular franchise. That all seems to have gone out the window as some kind of event in the game will be bridging the gap between the two series.

Developed by the same team as the "Kingdom Hearts" titles, Final Fantasy 15 is a break from the game's traditional turn-based combat and RPG elements. The new trailer, posted below, makes the game look a lot more like a westernized fighting game with giant monsters and large-scale boss fights. However, that's not to say it doesn't have the same Final Fantasy story line, characters and game elements as its predecessors on both the regular series and the Versus series.

The announcement of a continuation of the Final Fantasy Versus games comes as a shock, but not a surprise, to fans of the series. Development for this game was originally announced in 2006 with no real news following that. It was originally expected to be an early PlayStation 3 title.

After years of rumors and waiting, it seems the game is finally here. Hopes were so low for the game that IGN reported, at one point, Square Enix had to confirm the project had not been cancelled. No word yet on an actual release date or whether or not the game will be exclusive to the PS4.
