This year’s World Naked Bike Ride event was held in different places across the globe to celebrate and promote “a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world” last Saturday marking the event’s 10th Anniversary.
Anyone is free to join as long as you will comply with the dress code which is “bare as you dare”. There is no limit on how daring you want to be which made this annual world event extremely unique. Despite criticisms from other organizations due to its public nudity which many find lewd, the event still lives up to its advocacy and will not change how they express it.
So what are the different scenarios that happened this year?
In Portland, OR where about 8,000 participated this year were warned by the police to bare at a minimum and wear helmets and shoes for safety. The Portland City Code 14A.40.030 ordinance prohibiting private part exposure was suspended just for the day. The event began at 10p.m in the South Park Blocks and passed through Kerns, Lloyd, West Buckman, Sullivan’s Gulch, and Laurelhurst.
In Chicago, the organizers themed this year’s event to protest against the Big Oil. Participants took a 14-mile route around town with a stopover in Lincoln Park BP gas station for the protest. They also offered body paintings for those who are not yet ready to go all-out and allowed swim wears and costumes whichever makes them feel comfortable during the ride. The entire event lasted for three hours.
New York City also had the same event offering body paintings as well and games at the Grand Ferry Park on the Williamsburg Waterfront. The actual bike ride started at 6:15p.m.
Boston celebrated its third naked bike ride event which started at 9p.m on the Boston Common area and past through Cambridge Common. Not everyone was bare naked as organizers made it optional for everyone to bare or not. Those who opt to bare were offered body paintings.
Other cities such as Los Angeles, Washington, London, Montreal, Mexico City and Brazil also participated in this world event.
