Santa Monica Shooting Update: 4 Killed, Several Injured after Deceased Gunmen Shooting Rampage

California authorizes are investigating what motivated a man dressed in black to use a semi-automatic rifle on a shooting spree that killed four people and wounded several, according to reports.

Police said it began at the home what is believed to be the gunman's brother and father where he reportedly shot and killed them.

"Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis said that after leaving the home the gunman carjacked a woman and ordered her to drive. Along the way he fired at least several rounds at a city bus, wounding three people," according to the Chicago Tribune.

The gunman's next stop was Santa Monica College, where he reportedly opened fire in a staff parking lot, killing one victim and wounding the passenger of the victim's car. The school was put on lockdown.

Five other people were reported wounded in the shooting spree, which happened to be a few miles away from where President Barack Obama was speaking at a political fundraiser in Santa Monica.

According to reports, the rampage had no connection to Obama's visit to Santa Monica.

Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said the gunman continued to shoot at people in the library but did not hurt anyone. Officers gunned the shooter down at the community college library.

"The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene,"Seabrooks told CBS News.

Jimes Gillespie, 20, told The Associated Press he was also in the library during the time of the shooting. He was able to get a glimpse of the shooter, describing him as "a white man in his 20s, wearing cornrows in his hair and black overalls."

Many students reported hearing gunfire and screams inside the library.

"I was totally scared to death and I can't believe it happened so fast," told Vincent Zhang, a 20-year-old economics major to CBS News, who said he heard a woman pleading, "No, no. Please, no."
