UK Culture Secretary Wants To Block Internet Terror Sites, Pornography

The U.K. Culture Secretary Maria Miller has summoned all the bosses of leading Internet companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook to a summit in a bid to block all the terror sites and pornography in the country. The meeting is scheduled in two weeks time.

In the wake of the Woolwich terrorist attack, the U.K. culture secretary is asking all the Internet and telecom companies in the country to block all "harmful" content such as extremist material and pornography, according to The Independent.

Maria Miller is set to deliver an "enough is enough" message to the Internet service providers and telecom firms despite complaints that their products are too complex to regulate on the sites.

The government is aiming to censor all "harmful" contents including illegal porn, images of child abuse and materials that could provoke religious or racial hatred.

"Recent horrific events have again highlighted the widespread public concern over the proliferation of, and easy access to, harmful content on the Internet," she said in a letter addressed to Internet Service Providers.

"A relatively small number of organizations wield a great deal of online power - and I believe that with that power comes a great responsibility. Given the grave concerns that have been raised it is right that we now consider what more could and should be done in this area," said Miller.

The U.K. culture secretary has also asked Yahoo, Twitter, Talk Tlak, Vodaphone, Sky, and several others to attend the summit.
