Writer/producer Simon Kinberg is currently working on the next installment of the “X-Men” franchise, “X-Men Apocalypse.” Kinberg recently told Collider the film will be the end of the “First Class” trilogy.
“I will say that [X-Men: Apocalypse] is definitely the close of a trilogy for those First Class characters, which isn’t to say we won’t see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it’s a completion of an arc for them,” Kinberg said.
The biggest change in “Apocalypse” will be the shift in focus from the Magneto and Professor X dynamic to exploring the relationship between Mystique and Beast. In “First Class” Mystique and Beast were into each other, but chose to take different paths.
Mystique went along with Magneto to try and expose Mutants while Professor X fought to protect and teach them how to control their powers.
“I think that the friendship between Erik and Charles, which has always been so integral to the franchise, is something we’re continuing to explore and hopefully deepen with Apocalypse,” Kinberg told Collider.
“And the relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in Days of Future Past, so we’ll have an opportunity to do more of that in Apocalypse.”
“X-Men: Apocalypse” is slated to hit theaters on May 18, 2016.
