Three years after being disgraced from the fashion world for his alleged anti-Semitic rant, designer John Galliano made a comeback Monday by joining the French fashion house Maison Martin Margiela.
Galliano, known for his glamorous ball gowns and charismatic personality, was fired from Christian Dior in 2011 after a video surfaced of him allegedly professing his love for Adolf Hitler while on a drunken tirade, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The eccentric designer was also ordered to pay a $19,000 fine after he was found guilty of using anti-Semitic language in two bar fights. Galliano apologized and said he cracked under pressure from work and was abusing alcohol and drugs.
Since then, Galliano has remained for the most part missing in action from the fashion world. He spent a few weeks collaborating with designer Oscar de la Renta for New York fashion week in February 2013. The 53-year-old reemerged earlier this year when he was named artistic director for Russian cosmetics line L'Etoile. The British designer is considered one of the most talented of his time, winning the British Fashion Designer of the Year title four times, according to the BBC. For 15 years, Galliano wowed audiences with theatrical Christian Dior runway shows, culminating with him appearing on stage dressed in enchanting costumes like a pirate or matador for his final bow.
As Galliano prepares for his first Maison Martin Margiela collection, the question is will he carry on his dramatic flair or will he stick to the Paris-based label's traditionally moderate style, GraziaDaily.com noted. "Margiela is ready for a new charismatic creative soul," said Renzo Rosso, president of the label's parent company OTB, the WSJ reported. "I look forward to his return to create that fashion dream that only he can create," Rosso said according to Women's Wear Daily.
Galliano is expected to present his first collection during Paris haute couture fashion week in January, an unidentified industry source told the WSJ.
