A Tuesday morning shooting at a North Carolina high school left one student shot and another student taken into custody, police told WSOC-TV.
Albemarle High School was placed on lockdown following the shooting that occurred outside the school before the start of classes. Police received a call from the school about shots fired at 7:40 a.m.
Albemarle Police Chief William Halliburton said the suspected gunman, identified as Jalen Russell, allegedly shot another male student in the leg. The suspect immediately surrendered to the school's resource officer and the weapon was recovered, investigators told WSOC-TV.
The victim, Bernard Miller, was taken to a hospital for treatment but his condition was not immediately available.
Halliburton said the suspect and victim were arguing in a courtyard outside the school when the shooting occurred, Reuters reported.
"There was an argument or some type of altercation that led up to it," the police chief said.
Police have asked parents to head to the nearby North Albemarle Baptist Church instead of heading to the school, which is located less than 50 miles northeast of Charlotte.
Halliburton said the shooter could have harmed more people and that he is thankful for the speedy response, WSOC-TV reported. The school was evacuated closed for the day.
