Wal-Mart Fresh Produce: Company Promises Money Back For Unsatisfactory Fruits and Vegetables

Wal-Mart Inc announced a money-back guarantee Monday for its produce, if customers are not pleased with the fruit or vegetables they purchase, according to Reuters.com.

Despite being the biggest produce seller in the United States, Wal-Mart is making a push to increase its sales even further within the next few years.

The company is able to decrease the amount of time needed to ship the produce to its stores because it purchases the products straight from farmers. It also puts the burden of moving the produce on Wal-Mart trucks and distribution centers.

This is not the first money-back guarantee for fruits and vegetables. Safeway Inc. and Texas’ H-E-B have both previously announced guarantees. However, Wal-Mart’s guarantee may have the biggest influence because the chain is the largest vegetable and fruit seller.

According to Wal-Mart, customers are only required to return to a store with the receipt for the bad produce in order to get their money back. They are not asked to bring in the unsatisfactory produce.

Wal-Mart said it will incorporate the services of an outside company to inspect more than 3,400 stores every week. Wal-Mart also added it would monitor other produce sellers in addition to its own business each week.

The company is making sure its employees are aware of its produce push. It has been having 70,000 workers go through a training program for the selling of groceries. Administration in each store will have to know how to handle produce and pick out the best fruits and vegetables.
