Investigators say they have "no idea" where missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham is, even after a suspect has been charged in connection to her disappearance, the Associated Press reported.

Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said Thursday they expanded the search area for 18-year-old Graham to rural Albemarle County, outside the college town. A crime lab is currently testing clothing recovered from the suspect's apartment.

But they "still have no idea whatsoever" where the sophomore is, Longo said, the AP reported. "We have an obligation to bring her home, one way or the other. That's what we promised to do," the chief said.

The 32-year-old suspect, Jesse Leroy Matthew Jr., is charged with "abduction with intent to defile" the missing student. He was arrested Wednesday on a beach in Texas after fleeing the state, which investigators believe he did to evade arrest.

The 270-pound university hospital worker is the last person believed to have been with Graham when she vanished Sept. 13. That night she left an off-campus party and later texted her friends to say she was lost.

Graham and Matthew were seen near Tempo Restaurant at an outside mall in downtown Charlottesville a little after 1 a.m., according to surveillance cameras from the area.

Police believe Graham might have been under the influence of alcohol and therefore vulnerable. The owner of the restaurant, Brice Cunningham, told the AP his staff said Graham could barely walk without support from the man.

Matthew went inside the restaurant, however it's not clear if Graham actually followed him. Cunningham says Graham never entered, but police say at least one waitress placed her inside.

As the search continues, police said Matthew has agreed to be extradited back to Virginia, the AP reported. Investigators suspect he was trying to make it to Mexico from Texas.

"We seem to be the end of the road," Galveston County Sheriff Henry Trochesset told the AP. "For us, it's not strange that someone like that would be arrested here."
