A bill in Connecticut has been passed that will allow undocumented immigrants to obtain a driver's license according to Fox News.
Media reports indicate the Senate approved the bill at "by a 19-16 vote" and is currently awaiting the signature of Governor Dannel P. Malloy.
According to the Courant there are approximately 120,000 undocumented immigrants in Connecticut. Undocumented immigrants will be able to apply for a driver license in January of 2015.
All applicants must provide valid documentation to confirm their identity and birth place, to ensure they have resided in the United States for at least 90 days, and a back ground check will be completed. Like any one else who wishes to take on the road, all undocumented immigrants will have to pass a driving test.
Other states are considering a similar approach for undocumented immigrants who wish to drive.
"This is another terrific step forward for the immigrant community, but another sign that New York State has fallen behind as a leader in progressive reform," New York senator Adriano Espaillat said. "New York City remains the gateway for immigrants from around the world seeking to support their families and build a better life. But without a driver's license, they are pushed to the margins and left vulnerable to exploitation by unethical employers,"
Fox News reports Democrats who supported the passed bill did so because they felt it would improve safety on the road. Undocumented immigrants who are in need of a driver's license are required to pass the driving test which means if they pass the test, they are educated on the rules of the road and have acquired the skills to operate a vehicle. This may lead to a decrease in car accidents.
