It's long been buzzed that a "Ghostbusters 3" was in the works, but a new report claims that project could be replaced with a reboot of the original 1984 film with an-female cast. According to Variety, Paul Feig ("Bridesmaids") is in talks with Sony Pictures to direct the female reboot.
No formal negotiations have been made and it's being reported that there is no connection between the planned reboot and "Ghostbusters 3." The film Feig is said to be discussing would star an-female cast of comedic actresses with a script written from scratch.
"Ghostbusters 3" was originally supposed to be directed by Ivan Reitman (who helmed the first two) but he dropped out in March. So far another director has not been attached and it's not clear if Feige's reboot would take its place.
This summer the hit franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary with special events and releases, including a theatrical re-release of the first movie, Variety reports. The restored and remastered version of the film will hit theaters in over 700 locations in the United States and Canada beginning Aug. 29.
On Sept. 16 fans can purchase Blu-rays of the "Ghostbusters" 30th anniversary edition and "Ghostbusters II" 25th anniversary edition.
"'Ghostbusters' is still one of our studio's most beloved franchises - I was lucky enough to work on the release of the film on its first run, so it's a real thriller for me to see that it's still connecting with audiences everywhere," said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures. "On the big screen or in home entertainment, this is a great movie to experience again and again."
