In June's issue of More Magazine, "Smash" star Debra Messing opens up about her marriage and even talks about her iconic role on "Will & Grace."
Messing married Daniel Zelman in 2000 and the two have a son Roman, 9, together. However, the pair called it quits after 12 years of marriage and filed for divorce last year.
"We both wanted it to last forever, and it's a sad thing that it wasn't able to go the course," the actress said to the magazine. "Part of me will always contend with guilt that I wasn't able to give my son the fantasy that my parents were able to give me."
Despite the divorce, the pair still work to raise their son together.
"We really tried," she said. "We made sacrifices and compromises, and in the end we both realized that we like the day-to-day domestic life."
The actress admits the two are now co-parenting their son, "In my mind, we will be a nuclear family forever."
Though the 44-year-old actress has been on NBC's "Smash", it was her starring role on "Will & Grace" that put her on the map.
Messing played Grace Adler from 1998 to 2006 and scored an Emmy win in 2003. However, the actress explained that she turned down the role several times before taking the part.
"I didn't want to be, for lack of a better word, a fag hag," said the award-winning actress. "And I didn't want to be just the pretty, straight girl in the corner while the guys did all the funny stuff."
"Smash," which was wrap up with a series finale this Saturday, was canceled by NBC due to low ratings.
