Two toddlers are dead after a dresser fell on top of them at their Pennsylvania home on Friday.
Brooklyn Beatty and Ryeley Beatty, who were sisters, were at their home on Irwin Street in Aliquippa when a dresser fell and crushed them, CBS Pittsburgh reported. Emergency responders rushed 2-year-old Brooklyn and 3-year-old Ryeley to separate hospitals after the incident occurred at around 11 a.m.
Brooklyn was pronounced dead on Friday at Heritage Valley Beaver medical center, the Beaver County medical examiner told WTAE-TV. Her sister died Sunday afternoon at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
"When I heard that, I couldn't do nothing," Joseph Sheppard, a neighbor, told WTAE-TV. "I mean, it's a tragedy on a day like this, the Fourth of July. You wake up to something like this, it's just- not real."
It is not yet clear what caused the accident, but investigators are exploring the possibility that the dresser fell while the toddlers were climbing up the open drawers. The father was reportedly not in the room at the time of the incident.
"The dad, he said he was running bath water and he heard a boom," Sheppard told CBS Pittsburgh. "And he ran in there and I guess he lifted it up (the dresser) and (brought) them outside.
Police have since removed the dresser from the home, according to WTAE-TV.
Residents of the Aliquippa neighborhood have organized a candlelight vigil for the Beatty sisters in front of their home on Monday at 7 p.m.
"I think it will help them so they could see how a group of people comes together and support them, and that they know that there are people out there that care," neighbor Susan Fennell told WPXI-TV.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help raise money for the girls' funerals.
