Rapper Nicki Minaj made a shocking announcement during her BET Awards speech: that she almost died recently. On Sunday, June 29 the "Pills N Potions" rapper took home the honor for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist and after taking the stage to thank her fans and team (and throw shade at Iggy Azalea), Minaj recalled a near-death experience.
"The other day, literally I didn't tell anybody this, I really thought I was about to die. Like, I was saying my prayers to die," Minaj told the audience. "And I didn't even want to call the ambulance because I thought, 'Well if I call the ambulance, it's going to be on TMZ.' And I would rather sit there and die. And it made me realize I don't care what anybody got to say, I'm going to do me."
The rapper didn't elaborate on what almost killed her but Media Take Out reportedly has the scoop. According to the gossip site, Minaj thought she was dying from a weed overdose. A source told MTO that Minaj was in the studio with Lil Wayne and several other people who were all smoking "tons of weed, and possibly other substances."
The "Starships" rapper doesn't smoke but allows other people smoke around her in the studio.
"These [guys] went overboard with it though," the source said. "They kept smoking and smoking, till the whole building was full of weed smoke."
Minaj reportedly left the studio because she thought she was getting a contact high but "when she arrived home... began having palpitations and difficulty breathing."
"She thought she was dying, but did NOT call for emergency help. Eventually the feeling passed... and she had THE MUNCHIES," MTO wrote.
