A 20-year-old woman was arrested Tuesday for alleged prostitution at a Massachusetts library, CBS Boston reported.
Tewksbury police caught onto Brittany Macintyre's illicit operation when she offered to perform sexual acts on an undercover detective in exchange for money. Macintyre, from Nashua, New Hampshire, was taken into custody and charged with sexual conduct for a fee.
The undercover detective arrived at the Tewksbury Public Library after police received a tip that someone was offering sex to patrons.
"(The officer) went in, sat a computer just like he was a normal patron," Deputy Chief of Police John Voto told WCVB-TV. "The girl went up to him, and they began a conversation.
"She handed him a pen and a piece of paper, and they conversed back and forth," Voto said. They probably communicated via written messages to maintain the library's policy for silence, WCVB-TV reported.
Macintyre eventually asked for $60 to perform a sex act, the police chief said.
In addition to the prostitution charges, Macintyre had an outstanding warrant from Lawrence District Court for drug possession, according to CBS Boston. She is scheduled to appear in Lowell District Court on Wednesday.
Library patrons were shocked to learn of the scandal at the library.
"It was certainly surprising that something like that would happen here," Dave Marcus, who volunteers at the library, told WCVB-TV. "It's not just a place for books; it's a place for learning and being up-to-date. It's just unfortunate that something like this happens."
But apparently this is not the first time the Tewksbury library has been a location for sex soliciting. A homeless man was reportedly arrested last July for advertising on Craigslist that he would perform sex acts in the bathroom.
"I was thinking this thing would never happen again," Tolayuth Ok, who brings his son to the library, told the WCVB-TV. "And then it did."
