"Iron Man 3" has reportedly pulled in $1 billion worldwide after only 23 days at the box office, according to The Los Angeles Times.
According to the Los Angeles Times, this marks the 16th film that has ever hit the $1 billion amount. Six of the titles have been Disney movies. The first film to ever hit the billion dollar mark was "Titanic," according to the Huffington Post.
Of this, 70 percent of the movies business has come from sales overseas. Totals in the U.S. have hit $300 million.
The film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwenyth Paltrow, has collected more than $1 million in China, where it is performing the best. Downey's film "The Avengers" also hit the $1 billion mark last summer, according to the Huffington Post.
The Iron Man character, played by Downey Jr., was created by Stan Lee. The character centers on American billionaire engineer, Tony Stark who builds a suit of armor after suffering a chest wound by kidnappers who attempted to force him to build a weapon of mass destruction. He creates the suit to escape and then uses it to fight evil as Iron Man.
"Iron Man 3" sets a high precedent for other superhero movies set to be released this summer including Superman movie "Man of Steel" and "The Wolverine." The new figures make the third movie in the "Iron Man" movie series, inspired by the Marvel comics, the most successful.
