James McAvoy predicts Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique character will be the next "Wolverine" in the "X-Men" franchise.
In an interview with IGN, McAvoy explained no one really expected Mystique to be the standout "X-Men" character for the franchise, but her character's growth combined with Lawrence's acting has set Mystique apart from the rest.
"I think it's kind of a surprise that nobody was looking at the Mystique character, or the Raven character, to be quite so prominent at the end of First Class," McAvoy said. "And yet that character's grown so much, partly because they've got an incredible actress like Jennifer playing it. But yeah, maybe that could be a good one to go with."
Lawrence recently teased to The Hollywood Reporter during a red carpet interview Mystique's fate is unknown.
"This time because the future is undetermined, we have freedom to choose where we want to go with her," Lawrence said. "Is she going to become the assassin that we know her as now, like Rebecca Romijn's character? Or is she going to do what Charles [Xavier] wants and go down the path of no killing?"
FOX has yet to confirm a Mystique spinoff for their "X-Men" franchise, but "X-Men: Days of Future Past" writer Simon Kinberg teased there is interest in one.
"I have no idea if there will be a Mystique spinoff," Kinberg told Yahoo at a WonderCon presentation. "We got Jen's makeup [application] down from I think seven or eight hours on 'X-Men: First Class' to about three or four on this film, which is pretty awful but at least it's not torture. On the last film, I think she'd have to get there sometimes at midnight the night before we shot and sit in that makeup trailer and I guess just sleep until we started. This was more bearable and we were more conscious of when she was blue not having her sit around."
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" will be release to theaters on May 23.
