A Chicago man was arrested for allegedly feeding his girlfriend and a 1-year-old child a cake laced with marijuana.
Emmanuel Ekaette, 23, was at his girlfriend's house in the Calumet Park suburb on Saturday when she began eating a cake he brought, WLS-TV reported. His girlfriend began feeding pieces of the cake to the male child when the woman reportedly started to feel "hazy." The girlfriend took the child to the hospital where tests reveal the boy consumed pot, the station reported.
Ekaette was arrested later that same day and charged with three felony counts of aggravated battery, cannabis possession and endangering the health of a child, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
The girlfriend noticed several flakes in the cake after she began feeding it to the 1-year-old, who is a relative, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. She became concerned and asked Ekaette what was in the cake.
"She asked several times and he told her it was spices," Assistant State's Attorney Sean Brady said in court, the newspaper reported.
The girlfriend allegedly began feeling disoriented and took the both of them to the hospital for testing. Both the child and the girlfriend tested positive for marijuana, prosecutors said according to WLS-TV.
The girlfriend said the pot aggravated her anxiety disorder, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Reports say that Ekaette, also from Calumet Park, was smiling during his appearance in Cook County court on Sunday. He allegedly admitted to police he knew the cake contained pot, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Ekaette was charged and held on $50,000 bond. He handed over the alleged pot cake to authorities, which was submitted to a state police crime lab for processing.
