New York needed seven games against the Philadelphia Flyers to earn a spot in the second round. Goals from both Daniel Carcillo and Benoit Pouliot netted the Flyers a 2-1 win on Wednesday in Game 7.

Carcillo didn't play in the last two games, but he took advantage of the opportunity on Wednesday and scored his second goal of the series in the middle period.

"When you're in, you try to do something to stay in, whether it be offensively or bring a lot of energy," Carcillo told the Associated Press. "That's just what I was trying to do every time I was in this series. ...

"No one was jittery. We all knew what to do. On this team, no one was shying away from the big stage."

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist bounced back from his benching in the third period of Game 6 and made 26 saves to keep New York's season alive.

"Coming home last night, I was so disappointed," he said. "But at the same time, I was mad because we couldn't come up with a better performance. To play a Game 7 at home and to win, that was the inspiration.

"We played a really strong series. I think we were the better team. We pushed the pace almost every game. We definitely earned this one."

Pittsburgh defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in six games to advance to the second round. They closed out the series with two straight wins over the Blue Jackets.

"We keep coming and we keep coming, playing forward and playing in the offensive zone and grinding teams down with that play with that speed and quickness," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "Games 5 and 6 were our best at playing that way."
