A female high school student was fatally stabbed in the throat shortly after 7 AM on Friday morning in Connecticut by a fellow student over a refusal to go to the junior prom with him, sources told The Connecticut Post.
Milford police chief and school superintendent confirmed that the victim has died.
Immediately after the stabbing incident had occurred, Jonathan Law High School in Milford was placed on lockdown and students were sent back home with an early dismissal, Fox News reported.
The 16-year-old student suspect has been arrested, a former faculty member from the school told Fox News. According to The Post, the victim, Maren Sanchez, 16, was slashed in the throat and was initially reported to be in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
Some students said Sanchez was in "really bad" shape after being stabbed.
The incident was described as an isolated incident between the two students by the police, with all the other students declared as being safe.
The school's prom was allegedly scheduled for tonight at Bazzano's Four Seasons banquet hall in Stratford. However, it has since been postponed.
Twitter messages monitored by FoxNews.com indicated that the stabbing was over a prom-related issue, but police would not immediately confirm those reports.
According to Fox News, "Students at the school said that they were told initially to stay in their classrooms. The rumor had been that a fellow student was choked, The New Haven Register reported."
"Jonathan Law Principal Fran Thompson sent a message to parents saying there was a physical altercation between two students at the school, and one student required medical attention and was transported to a local hospital."
After the stabbing was reported, fire crews were dispatched to the Lansdale Avenue school, Fire Capt. Gregory Carman said.
Carman declined to disclose other information, but police were expected to release more details later in the morning.
