"Batman vs. Superman" (Man of Steel 2) will officially face-off with "Captain America" on May 6, 2016, Marvel announced.

"Captain America: The Winter Solider" grossed more than $96 million its premiere weekend.  According to the Los Angeles Times, the film has broken the record for the highest box-office debut for an April release.

"Following the record-breaking premiere of Marvel's 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' this past weekend, the First Avenger will jump into his next big screen solo adventure in just a little more than two years on May 6, 2016," Marvel said in a statement on their official website.

Rumors began to surface in March about Marvel's "secret" film slated for the May 2016 release date, but Forbes film blogger Mark Hughes claimed it would be unlikely two major studios would pin two mega franchises together and risk losing profit.

"Well, the reality is that of course there isn't going to be any true May 6th confrontation between these films. And I don't believe anybody at either studio ever seriously thought there would be," Hughes wrote in a feature for Forbes. "More to the point, though, despite the fact that of course there's competitiveness and trash-talk, and despite the fact both studios want their own films to be the best and highest grossing, neither studio actually wants the other to fail or wants to sink one another's films or franchises."

"Fans think that way," he added.  "The press thinks that way. But businesses with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in the assumption this genre will continue to be popular, and that audiences will continue feeling happy with superhero movies, do not feel that way." The "Man of Steel" sequel is currently in production.
