Jamaican dancehall star Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 murder of Clive "Lizard" Williams, the BBC reports. The 38-year-old singer and three other people - Shawn Campbell (aka Shawn Storm), Kahira Jones and Andre St. John - were all sentenced after being found guilty of murder.

A fourth associate, Shane Williams, was the only person found not guilty. According to the BBC, the key piece of evidence in the trial was a text message that was sent from the rapper's cell phone describing the murder.

In the text, Kartel said that Lizard's body had been cut up and no one would ever be able to find him, the Jamaica Observer reports. According to reports, police believe Kartel and his friends lured Lizard to the rapper's house over a dispute involving two missing illegal hand guns.

Police believe they brutally beat Lizard and then cut his body up into pieces before discarding his remains.  Despite the "Summer Time" rapper being locked up for the past three years and all his legal troubles, the demand for his music has remained high.

According to the BBC, Kartel recorded and released numerous songs from his cell and Jamaican radio stations will continue to play his songs.

"If we are going to play an artist's music based on their personal lives then a lot of artists' songs wouldn't be played," Jamaican radio presenter, DJ Sparks said. "His legacy will be a mixed one. He's been able to capture the imagination of many. He studies his audience carefully and gives them what he thinks they want. He's not only a good writer and lyricist but he knows how to delve into the mindset of his audience."

Kartel has worked with U.S. artists like Rihanna, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne and Missy Eliot.
