Cincinnati evened the series on Wednesday with a 1-0 win. Pinch hitter Chris Heisey singled in the ninth, sending Ryan Ludwick past home plate for the lone score of the game.
"Hits have been at a premium these past two days," Heisey said, via ESPN. "It's nice to play close games early and get the blood pumping."
Homer Bailey gets the start for Cincinnati on Thursday. The right-hander finished last season with an 11-12 record and 3.49 ERA; he's 2-2 with a 4.01 ERA in four career starts against the Cardinals, according to ESPN.
Bailey will likely be throwing to rookie catcher Tucker Barnhart, who's expected to make his league debut in place of Devin Mesoraco.
"We would've loved to allow him to get some seasoning at Triple-A, get used to catching more veteran, experienced pitchers and seeing what it's like to hit off those same types of pitchers in Triple-A," Reds manager Bryan Price told the team website. "That being said, there's no reluctance whatsoever to have him on our team working with our pitching staff. I think he'll do a phenomenal job and give us great support until we get Devin back."
Bailey is set to be opposed by Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn, who went 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts last season against Cincinnati.
