Who doesn't love the once-in-a-lifetime stories that sometimes seem to crop up of the unfortunate tragedy of the Titanic?
Well, the latest story comes in the form of a letter, providing a first-hand account of "'unforgettable scenes' of horror and heroism from the night the Titanic sank in the Atlantic waters in 1912," Press Trust of India reported.
In the August 8, 1955 letter, a French woman describes the "horror" and "sublime heroism" that was experienced by the passengers on the sinking ship.
The letter, which was discovered on Reddit, was written to another Titanic survivor named Madame Ausein, the Telegraph reported.
Rose Amelia Icard, who survived the incident, wrote a French letter "more than 43 years after the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean," PTI reported.
Martha Stone, the American widow of the president of Canadian telephone company Bell Cie, was allegedly the master of the working maid, Icard.
Describing the events, Icard illustrated the series of nightmares she still experiences even 43 years after the tragedy on April 15, 1912.
"Towards eleven o'clock Mrs. Stone and I went to bed. Three quarters of an hour later, as the liner was cruising at full speed, a terrifying shock threw us out of bed," Icard wrote in the letter.
Disoriented, the pair quickly got dressed and decided to step out onto the deck, PTI reported.
"At this moment we witnessed unforgettable scenes where horror mixed with the most sublime heroism. Women, still in evening gowns, some just out of bed, barely clothed, disheveled, distraught, scrambled for the boats," she wrote.
"Firm and calm, in the throng, officers and sailors were taking the women and children by the arm and directing them towards the lifeboats," Icard wrote.
The heart-wrenching real life scene of wives leaving their husbands behind on the ship was also narrated in the letter.
Out of 2,229 passengers and crew who were on board the Titanic, Icard was one of just 745 people to survive. According to PTI, the ship was on a maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
