Ninth-seeded Pittsburgh is coming off a loss to UNC on Saturday in the ACC tournament. While the Panthers earned a spot in March Madness, the team still faces an uphill battle without sophomore forward Durand Johnson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in January.
"It changed a lot of things and what we wanted to do," Pitt coach Jamie Dixon told the Associated Press. "He was one of our best five players. We weren't starting him, but he was our third-leading scorer. He was our best perimeter defender. ...
"It was his energy, it was his aggressiveness, it was his defense, and he had become a real good playmaker for us at getting other guys shots. Those were the things that stood out to me. And even though he had this reputation of being a shooter only, he had really developed his game and improved."
Colorado, meanwhile, is enjoying one of their best seasons. The Buffaloes' No. 8 seed is the highest they've ever had in an NCAA tournament, according to the Associated Press. Still, coach Tad Boyle needs for his team to get recognition they have to make a deep push in the tournament.
"For this program to get national respect, we have to play well on a national stage, and the stage doesn't get any bigger in basketball than the one we're on right now, the NCAA tournament," Boyle said. "... Every year you're here, you hope this is the year that that happens.
"But every year you look at your opponent, and you think, oh boy, we've got our hands full, and that's the case with Pitt."
