This photo illustration shows the ChatGPT logo at an office in Washington, DC, on March 15, 2023. The company behind the ChatGPT app that churns out essays, poems or computing code on command released on March 14, 2023, a long-awaited update of its artificial intelligence (AI).

This is the result of a new team-up between Volkswagen and Cerence, a multinational American-based company that develops new AI assistant software for vehicles, where the two plan to integrate ChatGPT with Volkswagens Ida voice assistant. According to CNET, the first Volkswagen that will have this feature will be the electric ID 4 and ID 3 and these are just two of the seven models that will have this feature. It was not stated if older model Volkswagen will also receive this feature.

How Does It All Work?

At the moment, Volkswagen voice assistant, Ida, currently functions similarly to Apple's Siri but for cars for example, drivers can set their car temperatures with a simple "Hey Ida, set the temperature to X" and they can also have Ida set a home course. However, by the second fiscal quarter of 2024, ChatGPT and Ida will come together. As a result, the new integration can ask Ida more complex questions as well as general knowledge questions an example might be "Hey Ida, where's the nearest gas station?".

These questions will then go through the cloud, processed by ChatGPT and then Ida will present the information. Furthermore, during its CES presentation, Volkswagen showed off an advertisement that featured Ewan McGregor, known for his role in the Star Wars franchise, where whilst driving the ID 7, one of the seven new models, the Scottish actor asked Ida if he should wear a kilt to a forthcoming even with Ida responding whether such a piece would be suitable.

While there seems to be some pushback against AI in some sectors, Volkswagen seems to be going all in with AI and ChatGPT, showing that while the program might not be suitable for certain aspects of life, it can still be useful in making some daily tasks easier.

HNGN reported that at the same presentation, LG revealed their new two-legged home bot that uses artificial intelligence to better understand what a customer may need.
