Humane's new AI Pin could cost customers $699 and would still come with a $24 monthly subscription in exchange for a variety of features, including access to large language models from OpenAI and Microsoft.

The device is set to launch on Nov. 9 and it would have access to T-Mobile's cellular network. The AI Pin is roughly the size of a large business card that you can clip onto your clothing using magnets and will act as a personalized assistant that you can control via voice and touch.

Humane is releasing its new AI Pin device that would cost $699 and have a monthly subscription fee of $24 for access to large language models from OpenAI and Microsoft.

A notable feature of the device is that it does not come with a screen, and instead projects a barebones user interface on the palm of the user's hand. More details regarding the AI Pin are expected to be revealed leading up to and after the device's actual launch, as per Engadget.

The device itself is more than just a magnet as it is also a battery pack that would allow users to swap in new batteries throughout the day to keep the device running. However, there are currently no details regarding how long a single battery would last. But the AI Pin is expected to ship with two "battery boosters."

Humane's new product will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and will come equipped with a camera, depth, and motion sensors to track and record its surroundings. It also has a built-in speaker, which the company calls a "personic speaker" that can connect to Bluetooth headphones.

Users who get the AI Pin would also be able to hold objects up to the camera of the device and interact with it through gestures because there is a touchpad somewhere on the pin. While it is not always recording or listening for a wake word, the device would require users to manually activate it in some way. The device comes with a "Trust Light" that blinks whenever the Pin is recording.

Documents obtained prior to the official launch of the AI Pin show that Humane is hoping that the device will be considered a fully standalone device instead of an accessory to people's smartphones. The price of $699 would come with the pin itself, a charger, and the two battery boosters.

A Variety of Features

The operating system of the new device is called Cosmos and instead of operating as a collection of apps, Humane seems to be thinking of a more seamless system that can call up various AIs and tools as users need them, according to The Verge.

The entire premise of the AI Pin sounds a bit like ChatGPT's plugin system, through which users can attach new features or data to their chatbot experience. It comes in parallel with reports that the AI Pin would be powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 technology.

In April, Humane's Imran Chaudri demonstrated how the AI Pin could project a caller ID when the user has an incoming call. He also showed how the device could summarize a day's worth of emails and identify foods and their nutritional values, said ZDNet.
