New Russian assault units are allegedly being established by Vladimir Putin. This was claimed by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S.-based war monitoring think-tank.

ISW shared the major details it knows about these new Russian military assault groups. Can they really overwhelm Ukraine's counteroffensives?

ISW said that on Monday, Sept. 25, a Russian news outlet (Izvestia) revealed that the Kremlin is creating new assault units to break through Ukraine's layered defenses and reconnaissance troops.

Citing sources in the Russian military, such as Russian Union of Paratroopers Chairmain Col. Valery Yuryev, Izvestia claimed that soldiers in these new brigades will be trained to counter enemies' reconnaissance at "tactical depth."

For those who are not familiar with military reconnaissance, it is a military activity involving area explorations to obtain critical information about enemy troops.

The acquired military details will also help the military to become more familiar with the terrains, as well as the civil activities in the targeted areas, as reported by the Independent UK.

ISW said that the new Russian assault units will receive light armored vehicles, tanks, artilleries, as well as advanced drones to overwhelm Ukraine's military reconnaissance.

But, the American war monitoring think-tank said that it is unclear how the Russian military plans to recruit, train, and fill the positions needed to complete the new assault brigades.

Russian President Vladimir Putin (C), accompanied by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu (L), uses a pair of binoculars as he inspects the joint Zapad-2017 (West-2017) Russian military exercises with Belarus at the Luzhsky training ground in the Leningrad region on September 18, 2017.

According to CBS News' latest report, Ukraine's military counteroffensives are also being enhanced, thanks to the support provided by the U.S. government.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the American-made Abrams tanks, which the U.S. promised, already arrived in the country.

"Good news from Minister (of Defense Rustem) Umerov. Abrams are already in Ukraine and are being prepared to reinforce our brigades," said Zelenskyy via his official Telegram message to Ukrainians.

However, the Russian government seems to be unbothered by the military aid of the U.S. France24 reported that the Kremlin warned Ukraine that the Abrams tanks and the long-range ATACMS missiles will not benefit the country's troops.

"All this can in no way affect the essence of the special military operation, its outcome," claimed Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

He added that there's no single weapon that can help Ukraine change the balance of power on the battlefield. Peskov has a point since it was confirmed that the Abrams battle tanks provided by the U.S. are very limited.

Sources said that Ukraine only received around a few dozen of these tanks. This was also confirmed by Ukraine's correspondent Gulliver Cragg, who said that the United States promised only 31 units, "which is not a huge number."
