Georgia is currently experiencing rapid growth as it attracts around 100,000 new residents annually. Many see the state's warmer weather, lower cost of living, and delicious southern cuisine factors for living there.

However, choosing where to live would be crucial as Georgia is one of the most crime-infested states in the US.

With that in mind, here are the 10 most dangerous cities in Georgia as provided by University City Review:

College Park

Population: 35,000

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 7

Recent statistics show College Park as the most dangerous city in Georgia for its staggering violent crime rate of 7,909 per 100,000 individuals despite having only 35,000 residents.

This rate made the city 228% more dangerous than the state average. While most reported incidents were property crimes, a few tend to be violent.Despite this, College Park aims to undergo several renovation projects to revitalize the city and make it safer for everyone. 

East Point

Population: > 35,000

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 10 (property crime); 1 in 68 (violent crime)

East Point was known for its high crime rate, 465% higher than the national average. With a population of over 35,000 people, the likelihood of becoming a victim of a violent crime is 1 in 68, but they only compose 545 reported violent crimes. Most crimes in East Point involved property crimes, with over 3,700 recorded in 2022 alone. 

Cordele

Population: 11,147

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 11

Situated in Crisp County, Cordele is one of the most difficult cities to live in Georgia, with a crime rate of 33% higher than the state average. In 2012, the city experienced the fourth-highest murder and property crime rates in Georgia and has not decreased significantly in recent years. 

Jesup

Population: 9.800

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: N/A

Jesup has a crime rate of 5,774 per 100,000 people, 140% higher than the Georgia average. In 2021, the city witnessed 46 violent crimes and 406 reported property ones, some of which were poverty and lack of opportunities, which, in turn, caused local government corruption. 

Douglasville

Population: 34,650

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 18

With almost 35,000 residents, Douglasville's high crime rate of 5,775 incidents per 100,000 people would make it 140% more dangerous than the state average. Gang activity is the main cause of the high violent crime rate, which was disproportionately high compared to the city's population.

Griffin

Population: 23,478

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 7 (overall); 1 in 21 (property crime)

The city of Griffin is also a place infested with criminals. With a population of almost 23,500 and a crime rate of 5,919 per 100,0000 people, residents have a 1 in 17 chance of falling victim to any crime.Griffin also recorded seven murders, 15 property crimes, and 213 assaults in 2021 alone, making it one of the most violent places in Georgia. 

Brunswick

Population: 15,210

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 24

Located near the state's coast, Brunswick is considered one of Georgia's most dangerous places to live. While modest compared to other cities, Brunswick's crime rate was 42% higher than the national average. While 202 violent crimes and 637 property crimes were reported in the city in 2022, Brunswick remains a thriving economic center because of its proximity to coastal ports. 

Moultrie

Population: 14,000

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 24

The total crime in Moultrie was 80% higher than the Georgia average, having a crime rate of 4,331 per 100,000.Most of the violent crimes in the city involve robberies and assaults. Additionally, while the number of murders recorded in 2021 was not high, given the city's population size, it was still concerning. 

Macon

Population: 157,346

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 26 (overall); 1 in 109 (violent crime)

A sizable population makes Macon a complicated place to live, as it has a crime rate of 3,900 per 100,000 people, which is 62% higher than the state average.In 2021, there were 1,459 reported violent crimes and 5,233 property crimes in the city, making it one of the most dangerous in the whole country.

Macon leads the country in homicides, plaguing it with gun violence due to gang activity and drug trade. The chances of being a victim of violent crime were 1 in 109, highlighting the seriousness of the issue. 

Atlanta

Population: 496,461

Chances of Being Affected by Crime: 1 in 27 (property crime); 1 in 34 (violent crime)

Lastly, Atlanta is one of the most significant cultural and economic centers, with a crime rate of 1,773 per 100,000 individuals. The incidence of crime in the city depends on where one lives, with the south and southwest regions of the city experiencing the highest rates in 2021.

In addition, Atlanta recorded over 3,700 violent incidents and over 18,600 property crime incidents

Other Cities to Look Out For Crime-Wise

Aside from these cities, Georgia also has other places where crime is a normal occurrence on the streets, making it the top third of the riskiest US states.

These places include Americus, Garden City, Albany, Waycross, Forest Park, LaGrange, and Eastman.
