Which State Has Sex The Longest? Map Ranks Intercourse Duration By State

People in New Mexico apparently have sex for an average of seven minutes, longer than any other state in the U.S.

The online magazine Nerve compiled the sexual data of 10,000 people across the 50 states in a map titled "The Longest (And Shortest) Sex In America." Using information provided by Spreadsheets, an app that offers feedback on a person's performance in bed, Nerve ranked the average sex session by state. The District of Columbia was also included.

West Virginia followed New Mexico as the next state to have sex the longest, with an average of five minutes and 38 seconds. After West Virginia came Idaho, South Carolina and Missouri. New York came in at number 23, averaging three minutes per sexual encounter.

At the other end of the spectrum is Alaska, with an average of one minute and 21 seconds. The second shortest sex duration, a minute and a half, went to South Dakota, Nerve reported.

The short time, however, does not mean that couples in Alaska and South Dakota are left unsatisfied. Studies in the past have concluded that sex lasts for an average of three to 13 minutes in the U.S. and Canada.

Spreadsheets' goal in collecting the data is to help Americans improve their sex lives, Nerve reported.

"Spreadsheets was created to approach sex in a way that is both light-hearted and improvement oriented," said Spreadsheets co-founder Danny Wax, Nerve reported. "We wanted to create an app that entices users to have some fun with their partner and share in that afterglow experience, while encouraging open dialog and feedback." Wax said.
