London Mayor Sadiq Khan acknowledged the grave problem in the Met Police force and the need to implement reforms in the 200-year institution.

An official assessment determined that the Metropolitan police got plagued with dysfunctionality, corruption, sexism, homophobia, institutionalized racism, and crumbling public confidence in the London law enforcement force.

One of the most scathing reports ever written about a major British institution was written by Louise Casey and authorized by the Met after one of its officers kidnapped, raped, and killed Sarah Everard in March of 2021, per The Guardian.

Baroness Louise Casey, in a 363-page report released on Tuesday on the Met Police scandal, determined that abuse against women and girls has not been addressed seriously, according to The Independent.

A quarter of employees who identify as having a protected trait (for example, race, sexual orientation, or impairment) said they have been bullied in the Metropolitan Police.

Lady Casey stated in her assessment that "public consent is broken," with just 50% of the general populace having trust in the police before the biggest recent scandals were revealed.

She remarked, "Public respect has fallen to a low point," attributing the decline mostly to the organization's previous leadership. Lady Casey also noted that there are more Londoners who lack faith in the Metropolitan Police than those who do, and black Londoners have consistently scored lower on these indicators.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan Dismayed by Met Police 'Darkest' Moment

London Mayor Sadiq Khan stressed the need of seizing the moment to reform the aged police force.

"Today is, without doubt, one of the darkest days in the history of our almost 200-year-old Met Police service," Mayor Sadiq Khan said, per the Evening Standard.

While he acknowledged that the police still contained "toxic" people, Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley promised that they were being "rooted out" of the institution.

He said he was "embarrassed" by the Met Police scandal report's findings and admitted that there were problems with the organization's structure, its leadership, and its culture.

"We have racists, misogynists, and homophobes in the organization," Rowley remarked.
