Sony is well ahead of its projected deadline to surpass 5 million PS4 sales by March as the company announced 5.3 million units shipped worldwide as of February 8.

Sony, the maker of popular PlayStation gaming consoles, takes pride in announcing a new milestone achieved by its popular PlayStation 4 gaming console. Just days after announcing that it outsold Xbox One with nearly double the sales in January, Sony confirmed Tuesday that it sold 5.3 million PS4s across the globe as of February 8. This is a significant achievement as the company had projected it will surpass 5 million units by March 31, 2014.

Sony reached its first million mark in just 24 hours after the launch in the U.S. and Canada, November 15. The company did not take long before it surpassed 2.1 million units in mid-December. The PS4 was launched in 32 countries that aided in the massive success of the next-gen gaming console. Last Thursday, Sony announced that it outsold its competitor Xbox One with nearly double the sales in January, when the company announced its 4.2 millionth mark.

A message from President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Andrew House, shows his excitement at the big news.

"I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season," House said in a blog post, Tuesday. "We are delighted that according to the NPD Group's latest data, PS4 was January's top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system's momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans."

Microsoft, on the other hand, failed to achieve a similar success, but the impressive sales of Xbox One cannot be ruled out completely. Launched in November, Microsoft's gaming console reached its one millionth mark in less than 24 hours. The software giant announced that it had sold over 3 million units by the end of December, after which there has been no data on the Xbox One sales. With Sony announcing its remarkable success, it is likely that Microsoft will too give away its statistics soon.

Sony PS4 sales are expected to go further up as the company is set to launch the console in Japan, February 22, the last country to see the device's launch.
