Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently expressed his desire to be an owner of an NBA team.

The 45-year-old boxing sensation from Michigan said in an interview that he has been discussing with the pro-basketball league about joining an ownership group to purchase a team, per The Score.

According to Sam Gordon of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Mayweather, a former five-division world champion, has avoided disclosing to the public about his plan, which he is working on "behind the scenes." Though, he revealed that he has been communicating with particular people in the previous months about getting an NBA franchise.

Mayweather said: "I've been talking to certain individuals for the last six months. That's something I've been working on behind the scenes, but I've never come out and publicly talked about that with the media."

"Me and my team have been working behind the scenes with the NBA. I can't say exactly where, but I'm working on getting a team," the Olympic bronze medalist added.

The franchise with the lowest worth in the league in the current season, according to Forbes estimates, was the Memphis Grizzlies at $1.5 billion.

What Is Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Net Worth?

Though "Money" is among the world's wealthiest athletes today and considered the richest boxer of all time, Floyd Mayweather Net Worth 2022 is around $450 million per Celebrity Net Worth, which means he cannot become a solo NBA team owner given his present amount of wealth.

Floyd Mayweather has earned a lot in his bouts: $250 million for fighting Manny Pacquiao in 2015, Generated $300 million in his fight against Conor McGregor in 2018.

He has earned around $1.1 billion in his career to date. Moreover, Mayweather typically earns $10 million from endorsements every year.

Nevertheless, Mayweather could still become an NBA team owner by convincing investors to establish an NBA ownership organization. That is what he has been trying to achieve these days.

"I've been working on that for a good while now. I've been working behind the scenes. I didn't want to bring it out until it was engraved in stone," he said.

One of his potential partners is another athlete who recently became the first active NBA player to become a billionaire, per Forbes-- Lakers superstar LeBron James.

Mayweather lives in Las Vegas, which has been mentioned as a possible NBA expansion city. LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers has indicated a desire to buy an NBA team in Sin City.

James and Mayweather, two of the most well-known athletes of their time, could form the backbone of a Vegas ownership group, though there would certainly be others involved in working it out.

No NBA Expansion as of Now

According to Bleacher Report, the NBA is not currently discussing expansion, says Commissioner Adam Silver, but he admitted that it is "invariable" that the league will expand "at some point."

Yet, during a news conference prior to the beginning of the 2022 NBA Finals in early June, Commissioner Silver downplayed speculation of imminent expansion of the league, saying that "talk is not true."

"At least maybe there are people talking who are not at the league office about us potentially expanding after the 2024 season. We are not discussing that at this time," he noted.

Commissioner Silver added: "As I said before, at some point, this league invariably will expand, but it's not at this moment that we are discussing it."
