Former U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords posted a Facebook video of herself driving for the first time since she was shot in the head three years ago, the New York Daily News reported.
The video, posted Friday, shows Giffords driving around the Circuit of the Americas raceway in Texas with her husband in the passenger seat.
"I traveled to the Circuit of The Americas and drove for the first time since the shooting that nearly took my life," Giffords wrote on Facebook.
Giffords, 43, suffered a severe gunshot wound to the head in January 2011 when a man open fired at a "Congress on Your Corner meeting" she was having in Tucson, Arizona, the Daily News reported. Six people were left dead.
Giffords, who was elected to Congress in 2006, stepped down from her position one year after the shooting. During her recovery, Giffords has worked tirelessly for more gun control measures.
The former representative said this year will be a comeback for her.
"2014 will be a year of many wins for me- moments when I do something I thought I might never be able to do again," Giffords wrote on Facebook .
"I started the year by skydiving with my good friend, former Navy Seal Jimmy Hatch. Since then, I've been practicing my French Horn, working on my speaking, and walking a bit faster every day," Giffiords wrote.
In the video, Gifford's husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, helps his wife.
"Ok slow down, slow down." Kelly said in the video. "You got it. You got it."
Giffords said driving on the racetrack was similar to her riding her motorcycle in her home state Arizona.
"I feel honored to have taken this important step on one of the finest tracks in the world," Giffords wrote. "And while I may not be Mario Adretti, I think I handled the road pretty well. I hope you enjoy seeing this special moment!"
