Ex-NFL defensive end Hugh Douglas' lawyer announced on Friday that his client is slated to plead no contest to a misdemeanor charge against him.
Douglas was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree strangulation of his girlfriend, according to a report by CBS Sports.
The 42-year-old is set to plead no contest to a charge for breach of peace. According to his attorney who spoke with the Associated Press this week, Douglas and his legal team are hoping that will keep him out of jail for the time being.
Douglas reportedly told police at the time of the event that he and the woman were simply engaging in rough intercourse.
Douglas was fired from his job at ESPN just weeks before he was hit with the assault and strangulation charges last September.
The former DE, who played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars, co-hosted ESPN2's Numbers Never Lie until he reportedly used racist language and got into an altercation with his colleague, Michael Smith.
According to CBS, the former sports radio host confronted Smith at a party in a drunken stupor.
Douglas played for 10 seasons in the NFL between 1995 and 2004.
