The biggest question for Minnesota (24-25) heading into Friday's contest is whether All-Star forward Kevin Love will be available. Love, who leads the team in points (25.6) and rebounds (13.2) per game, missed Wednesday's loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder with a stiff neck.
Love's stiff neck, which he incurred on Tuesday in Minnesota's win against the Lakers, could leave the team without their star player for the second straight game.
"I think it shows that these guys compete," Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman said of the team's 106-87 loss to Oklahoma City, via ESPN. "They weren't afraid to go play them with three starters out (Love, Nikola Pekovic and Corey Brewer). It gave the other guys an opportunity to play. I couldn't be prouder of the way they competed. We just ran a little bit out of gas at the end."
New Orleans, meanwhile, is seven games out from the No. 8 playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Pelicans (21-27) have had an uneven start to the new year, winning six of their last 10 games.
Despite the rocky couple of weeks, the team is coming off a 105-100 win on Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks. Brian Roberts helped New Orleans nab the victory with his 19 points and six assists, the type of contribution Pelicans coach Monty Williams hopes to see again.
"Brian Roberts probably looked around and didn't see anyone making shots so he stepped up. I told him to play free," said Williams. "The first half I thought he was a bit tight. I'm always telling our guys everybody has written you guys off, so what do you have to lose? Just go out there and play. I got your back either way."
