No. 12 Louisville bounced back from their loss to Memphis on Jan. 9 with a four-game winning streak. The Cardinals (17-3) head into Thursday's game coming off last night's 86-47 rout of South Florida.
"We have gained a lot of strength in terms of being able to change our defenses and recognize when we should change our defenses," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said, via the Associated Press.
While the Cardinals' defense has improved, their offense has continued to thrive behind senior guard Russ Smith. Although he scored only 12 points against South Florida, Smith leads the team with 18.1 points per game.
Wednesday could turn into a shootout between Smith and Bearcats senior guard Sean Kilpatrick, who leads Cincinnati in scoring with 19.1 points per game. Although both guards can score, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin believes the two guards are at their best when they don't try to over do it.
"Obviously, Sean is bigger and Russ is faster, but I think when both of them are at their best their shot selection is great," Cronin said. "I think both of them are at their worst when they take too many shots and too many hard shots.
"Their teams both tend to excel when they are judicious with their shot selection and their all-around offensive game is at its best."
Cincinnati, ranked No. 13, is looking for their 13th straight win on Thursday. The Bearcats (19-2) have played well all season, but Cronin expects his team to be challenged by Louisville's defense.
"They need to understand that Louisville's defense - especially the deflections and the pressure - are something we haven't seen yet this year," said Cronin. "We've had good teams that we've played against, but nobody that plays their style of defense. That would be my concern."
